What is an Antioxidant and What Does it Do?

Antioxidants are a class of compounds that help protect the human body from the effects of oxidation.

An antioxidant neutralizes free radicals, which are highly reactive molecules that can cause damage to healthy cells in the body. Oxidative stress is thought to contribute to aging, as well as a number of chronic diseases.

That’s why by now you’re wondering what does antioxidants mean for your skin? Well, there are several foods that promote healthy glowing skin like blueberries and green tea.

These foods are full of antioxidants which make them perfect for a rejuvenating face mask. The problem is that the only way to derive personal benefit from them is by ingesting them orally.

Oxidation can happen when free radicals attack a molecule and steal electrons from it. This process can damage cells and lead to inflammation, which is bad news for your skin.

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by giving up their own electrons to them instead of letting them attack other molecules.

Free radicals can be caused by things like pollution, smoking, radiation exposure, alcohol consumption and even some pharmaceuticals. Because of this, it is important to use products that contain antioxidants to protect your skin from free radical damage.

  • The difference between hydrated and moisturized hair is that hydrated hair has a higher percentage of water in it, while moisturized hair has more oils or conditioners on it.
  • Hair hydration is the process of restoring water to the hair shaft. Hair moisture is a lot more complex and it includes conditioning, sealing and styling.
  • Hair hydration can happen naturally but it is not enough to keep the hair in good condition. That’s why we need to use hair moisturizers too.
  • Hydrated hair has more volume and shinier appearance than dry hair. Moisturized hair feels softer to touch and has less breakage than dry hair.

If you want to start using retinol but don’t know when it’s best to add it to your skincare routine, here are some guidelines.

Keep in mind that there are no guarantees for any particular age range — and, a lot of people will tell you to start much sooner than what is on here.

If you feel like your skin has been healthy and happy without retinol so far, there is no need to rush right out and try it (at least not yet). Try another great anti-aging ingredient first.

How gradual?

It depends on how sensitive your skin is and what type of retinoid you’re using.

For example, if you’re using an over-the-counter product with vitamin A (retinyl palmitate), then you could start seeing results after just two days.

On the other hand, if you’re taking prescription tretinoin (Retin-A), then it might take several months before any changes are noticeable.

If you notice any irritation during that time, stop using it immediately and talk to your dermatologist about ways to soothe your skin.

If you have very sensitive skin, don’t use retinol without talking to your dermatologist first.

It makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight and puts you at risk for hyperpigmentation. It can also irritate acne. So if you have sensitive skin and/or break out easily, make sure to use a low-strength retinol product and wear sunscreen every day (it’ll even help with wrinkles!).

In general, start using retinol at night so that your body has time to adjust during a slow transition period of about 2 weeks; then slowly introduce it into your morning routine once your body is used to it.



How do I check if my skin is sensitive to retinol?

Sensitivity to retinol is a possibility and usually goes away within several weeks of consistent use.

However, sensitivity to it has a higher chance of occurring if you start using a topical product with high concentrations too quickly. To prevent irritation and burning, it’s best to test yourself for sensitivity before jumping into a full-blown regimen.

Before you buy your first retinol cream or serum, dab just a bit on your skin at night and wait until morning to see how your skin reacts.

If it looks fine and isn’t red or flaky, then go ahead with using it regularly!

If you do experience any irritation after trying a product once (or even a few times), stop using it immediately until all symptoms are gone.

This is the ultimate test to figure out once and for all, what your skin type is.

In order for you to do this test properly, you need to cleanse, rinse, and wipe your face dry using a soft paper towel and leave for 30 minutes to an hour without applying a moisturizer.

Cut a tissue into 4 pieces and blot each piece onto the following areas:

  • Forehead
  • Nose
  • Cheeks
  • Chin

After blotting your skin, look for your skin type in the following options:

  1. If the tissue has an oily residue after blotting all four areas, then you have oily skin.
  2. If the tissue has an oily residue after blotting forehead, nose, and chin, then you have combination skin.
  3. If there is no oily residue on the tissue after blotting, then you have dry skin.
  4. If your skin feels tight, itchy, and uncomfortable, then you have sensitive skin.

We all know that in order to achieve smooth and soft skin, we have to get rid of the dead skin cells that are blocking those new and healthy skin cells.

On average, a skin turnover cycle is 5-6 weeks. At the age of 21 it takes 14-21 days, and as we grow older, our skin cycle slows down.


Therefore, in order for us to speed up the process and get rid of more dead skin cells, we must exfoliate. Here, we will be looking into chemical exfoliation in details to explain what it is and how it works.

Chemical exfoliation may sound intimidating at first, however, it has become a very popular gentle treatment for achieving soft, smooth, and glowing skin.

Chemical exfoliants range from alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHA), to other chemical compounds such as mandelic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, and salicylic acid.

These acids react with the outermost layer of the skin as soon as the product is applied.

Acne treatment options are plentiful, but not all treatments work for everyone. They can be divided into – medical treatments (prescriptions), and over-the-counter treatments, choosing the right treatment will depend on the type of acne you have, however, you can visit a dermatologist.

What are Acne Scars and What Causes Them?

It is important for you to know the different types of acne scars so you can better understand your options for treatment.

Acne scars are a result of inflammation in the skin.
They are often caused by picking at pimples or blackheads, which causes the pimple to spread under the skin and create a raised bump or nodule that takes much longer to heal than if it was left untouched.

This occurs when the engorged pore or follicle swells and causes a break in the follicle wall. Superficial wounds that are closer to the skin’s surface tend to heal quickly and without leaving any scars behind. However, when the wound damages the second layer of the skin (dermis), scars form on the skin.

The greater and deeper the inflammation, the more likely scarring is to occur. In order for the skin to repair the damage done to the dermis, collagen is produced. This protein is what gives the skin its flexibility and strength.

The Different Types of Acne Scars

Acne scars generally come in two main categories; atrophic and hypertrophic. Atrophic scars are those caused by a loss of tissue, and hypertrophic are those caused by an excess of tissue. Among these two categories, there are 4 types of scars; ice-pick scars, boxcar scars, rolling scars, and keloid scars.


Ice-pick Scars

These scars are deep and narrow, they’re so deep that they sometimes pierce the skin and go down to the level of the dermis, which means that they can’t be treated with topical treatments like retinoids or lasers.

They can also be difficult to conceal with makeup.

Treatments

There are a few treatment options for treating or removing ice-pick scars.

The most effective treatments are the best scar treatments and they include punch excision and punch grafting.

Punch excision is where scar tissues are removed surgically using a tool called: the punch tool, and then followed by stitching the skin.

Punch grafting, the second most effective scar treatment involves removing the scarred tissue and replacing it with a new skin graft taken from the back of the ear.


Boxcar Scars

Boxcar scars look like round or oval depressions in the skin with sharp vertical sides and give an uneven appearance to the skin.

Microdermabrasion is a superficial treatment that treats the top layer of the skin.

Fillers are used to fill the space under the scar and make the skin appear level and smooth.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to treat scars. It can also be used to improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and improve skin elasticity.

The procedure consists of using a controlled device with multiple rows of needles that are passed over the surface of the skin. This process stimulates collagen production, which can help with scarring and elasticity. This procedure is done by a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon and it usually takes about 15 minutes. The microneedles will puncture the surface of the skin, but they won’t go deep enough to cause any damage to the underlying tissue or create scars.


Rolling Scars

These scars are wider than ice-pick scars but not as deep. They have a smooth surface and blend well with makeup but they cannot be completely concealed by it either. They make the skin look craggy and uneven.

Treatments

Scar removal treatments are various, some examples are subcision, punch excision, punch elevation, punch grafting, dermabrasion, microneedling, and chemical peels, to name a few.

The goal of these treatments is to reduce the depth of the scar so that the surface of the skin returns flat, although discoloration might occur.


Keloid/Hypertrophic Scars

These scars are firm, raised scars that grow above the surface of the skin, this is the result of excess production of collagen. Keloid scars typically are larger than hypertrophic scars and have the potential to be painful and itchy.

Treatments

If the keloid scar is relatively new, less-invasive treatments are recommended, such as silicone pads, pressure dressings, or injections. If the scar is an older one, laser treatments are one way to address it. The goal of this treatment is for the keloid to resurface and create a smoother appearance. The most effective treatment is cryosurgery, where the keloid is frozen using liquid nitrogen.

The bottom line is, that the best acne scar treatments for you will depend on your skin type and the severity of your acne scar.
